The Importance of Advent
Advent is not simply a religious ritual, it is a moment each day during the Christmas season to reflect on the Biblical narrative woven throughout scripture of the coming savior (Messiah) and the fulfillment of these prophesies with the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christians from all over the globe celebrate advent and its four main themes: Hope, Peace, Love and Joy. Though advent may be celebrated in many various ways, the core foundation is looking to scripture and remembering the promises and their fulfillment in a savior for our eternal salvation.
The definition of Advent is Arrival and represents not only the arrival of Christ in His birth but also the anticipation of His promised return.
How To Make An Advent Candle
Step 1

Measure from the top of the candle down. The bottom inch to inch and a half of your candle will be used in the candlestick. Beginning at the tip of a 10″ beeswax taper candle, use a permanent marker to dot every 3/8″ until you have 24 markings. This will divide the candle into 25 segments leaving a larger segment on the bottom of the candle to place into a candlestick.
Step 2

Beginning at the top of the candle, write each number corresponding to the line. This is to mark each day for the advent season. I placed the base of each number onto the dot. This will ensure that each date is fully burnt for each day of advent.
Variations of Advent Candles For Christmas
- One year I did a single candle for each day similar to this, which was lovely but expensive and even with my good intentions not every evening was I able to burn the entire candle. It felt wasteful.
- I personally love a taper candle but this design would be elegant on a pillar candle. Check out these piller candle ideas as an alternative Christmas aesthetic this year. Either candle shape is beautiful in a Christmas wreath centerpiece.

Free Printable Advent Calendar
To go with your advent candle I have created a Free Advent Printable complete with a verse or passage for each of the 25 days of Christmas. You can download it below! This was made specifically for my family and I would love to share it with yours. Bring Christ back into Christmas this year.
- Beginning in Genesis and ending in Luke with the Birth of Christ.
- Use this advent as a guideline to help you show your family the Biblical story of Christ throughout the Bible during the Christmas season.
- Create a moment each morning around the breakfast table that begins the day in Truth and Love.
